Symptoms and Iatrogenics

Reported symptoms + you've had a head injury? Medically, providers feel compelled to do something about it.

Without a true understanding of objectivity being the anchor for making clinical decisions, espeically concussions, it's go mode for some type of treatment.

This is where iatrogenics comes in.

Because I don't think there's objectivity in diagnosis ➡️ I rely on the subjectivity of self reported symptoms ➡️ I'm going to prescribe something so that you feel better ➡️ If you feel better, I feel better about my medical decisions

A prime example? Rest. Research shows it makes things worse, but it's still one of the most often prescribed treatments for concussions. Providers "feel" better about helping the patient, unknowingly making things worse.
